Activation Plan
Below is an overview of some campus activities:
The Madison Center for Civic Engagement implements year-round, nonpartisan voter education and engagement via the Dukes Vote initiative, integrates civic learning opportunities into curricular and non-curricular programming through partnerships with orientation, first year seminars, and general education courses, assesses civic learning with JMU’s Center for Assessment & Research Studies, and collaborates with community, national, and international partners on related events.
The Better Conversations Together program serves primarily first year and new transfer students, helping them build civic mindsets, capacities, and skills for dialoguing across divides and finding common ground on wicked issues.
The Madison Center is the home of the Civic Leadership minor, teaching students the skills, theories, and values of civic-focused public service and community leadership. The minor features civically engaged courses from all eight of JMU’s academic colleges, a unique civic dialogue focused study abroad program, and robust internship or research opportunities.
JMU assesses every student in civic engagement in partnership with the Center for Assessment & Research Studies.
