Activation Plan
Below is an overview of some campus activities:
- HuskiesVote, established in 2019, is a campus-wide initiative designed to provide Northern Illinois University students with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities they need to participate fully in their elections. As part of HuskiesVote, Peer Voting Ambassadors engage directly with their peers to promote voter awareness and participation across campus.
- The university established an Engagement Roundtable whose goals are to:
1. Support impactful collaboration within NIU and between NIU and its partners.
2. Facilitate alignment of existing and emerging community engagement activities and initiatives.
3. Guide the development of an effective engagement infrastructure that serves multiple institutional goals.
4. Lead the effort to ensure NIU’s continued designation as a Carnegie Engaged Institution.
5. Provide inspiration and guidance to fellow faculty, staff and students for a shared vision for public good. - The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences developed a lecture series on Rebuilding Democracy that showcases how the liberal arts and sciences are at the center of a healthy democracy. The series takes a broad approach, addressing various aspects of what needs to be done to rebuild democracy and bring together a fractured society.
- Every Fall, NIU hosts its Campus Meets Community event, during which students have the opportunity to connect with local businesses and nonprofits to learn about employment and volunteer opportunities.
- In November 2025, NIU will host a two-day Midwest convening with Campus Compact, where teams from NIU and other midwestern universities will do action planning for deepening and institutionalizing community and civic engagement on their campuses
- NIU is classified as a Carnegie Engaged Institution, one of 350 in the U.S., demonstrating the university’s institutional commitment to and excellence in community and civic engagement.
- The university has been recognized by ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge as a 2024 ALL IN Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting for its intentional work to institutionalize nonpartisan democratic engagement to increase student voter engagement and earned a Silver Seal in Excellence in Student Voter Engagement based on its 2022 campus voting rate from your National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE) report from Tufts University.
