An informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy, and higher education plays an important role in preparing students to be active community members, have well-reasoned and civil discussions, and participate in civic life. Rollins College’s commitment to free inquiry and expression, civil discourse, and civic preparedness is critical to this mission.

Below is an overview of some campus activities:

  • In 2023, the College of Liberal Arts adopted an Intercultural Competency graduation requirement as part of the general curriculum. The goals of the course include engaging with students in discussions that require civil dialogue across a range of controversial topics.
  • Rollins conducts yearly faculty development sessions on how to navigate polarizing and divisive discussions in the classroom.
  • Rollins hosts the Politics on Tap series, a monthly informal conversation about political and social issues. The Fiat Lux Dialogues: Common Ground Initiative holds workshops and guest speakers on developing the skills and practices to navigate difficult conversations.
  • Rollins has sent faculty members to the College Presidents for Civic Preparedness Faculty Institute.
  • In 2025, the College adopted “Educating for Intercultural Competency” as our Quality Enhancement Plan for assessment, pairing efforts in the curriculum and co-curriculum.
  • In 2025, Rollins hosted the “John Dewey, 90 Years Later: How the Liberal Arts Strengthen Democracy” conference, which welcomed distinguished speakers and educators from across the country. It was a meaningful event that underscored our commitment to liberal arts and civic engagement.
  • We are bringing students, faculty, and staff to Interfaith America convenings and summits to deepen our capacity to bridge divides and enrich our programming.
  • We are committed to empowering our students to lead these conversations. Through peer education initiatives and student-curated events, we aim to equip them not only to participate thoughtfully but also to guide dialogue with empathy and insight.
