Below is an overview of some campus activities:

  • Colby has a major civic engagement program with students applying to live in the largest residence hall in the middle of the city with the application largely focused on their plans to work in local civic organizations. The College has also worked to revitalize its city catalyzing $200m in redevelopment that has created thousands of new jobs, a stronger economy, and a more vibrant civic life.
  • Colby’s Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs is designed to facilitate discussions on major issues of the day from a variety of perspectives and hosts major free speech events and debates for the community.
  • Colby has a strong policy statement on freedom of expression and inquiry that was approved by the student government, the faculty, and the trustees. The topic of free expression is a singular event during student orientation to help acculturate students with the College community’s values and includes outside speakers on the topic.
  • Faculty and students engage in direct work to strengthen democratic institutions, including Colby’s Drug Policy Lab which looks at policy alternatives to the drug epidemic in Maine and engages with the state legislature on this topic. Faculty focus on the rural-urban divide in voting and perceptions and just hosted a major conference on “rethinking rural.” Additionally, Colby has a faculty teaching program in Maine’s prisons.
