This is a critical role for higher education that is more important than ever in today’s highly polarized environment. We are challenged today by the fact that much of the American populace does not have confidence in higher education, so a collaborative, focused initiative such as this represents our best opportunity to emphasize the importance of preparing engaged citizenship.

Below is an overview of some campus activities:

  • The University of Dayton will build upon its foundation of Catholic social teaching to encourage students to actively engage in the community and practice dialogue across difference.
  • The Dialogue Zone is a curricular and co-curricular initiative that builds capacity among students, staff, and faculty to learn and practice facilitated dialogue in order to address difficult issues that arise among community interactions. By creating space for multiple perspectives, cultivating listening skills, and promoting critical understanding, UD fosters a culture of dialogue. The Dialogue Zone reimagines conflict and challenging conversations as opportunities for learning and reflection that contribute to the common good.
  • The Center for Social Concern seeks to unite faith and action for justice. This mission is carried out by numerous opportunities for students to engage in reflective service, service-learning, education, and advocacy for justice. Catholic social teaching is the foundation and guide of this mission and is integrated into all the Center’s programs. While undergraduate students are most often involved in the Center, its mission is to integrate the moral principles and academic learning of the University community by encouraging ethical responsibility for sustaining and enhancing human dignity and social justice.
  • The Fitz Center for Leadership in Community has a broad array of relevant programs that are built on sustained relationships with dozens of community organizations and serve as a connecting point and campus-wide partner for community partnerships, leadership, community-engaged learning and scholarship, and innovative solution-based strategies to civic needs through an asset-based approach.
  • Dayton Civic Scholars are students who make a three-year commitment to engaging and serving the greater Dayton community. The interdisciplinary group of students follows an intentional pathway from the classroom to community leadership and public service. Their commitment includes attending a weekly mini-course, taking the Leadership in Building Communities course, and engaging with the community at least 30 hours per semester. The intent is to enable up to 45 University of Dayton students to have high community impact in the community by preparing each 15-student cohort for meaningful civic leadership roles as students.
