Activation Plan
Below is an overview of some campus activities:
- The Civic Education Research Lab (CERL) conducts evidence-based research on education in civics, social studies, American government, and politics. CERL has produced extensive studies of civic education at the K-12 level, including students’ acquisition of civic knowledge, dispositions, and skills as a result of taking a civics class or participating in a civics program.
- At the McCourt School of Public Policy, the Institute of Politics and Public Service works to achieve four key goals, including pulling back the curtain on the political process; helping students design their own path to careers in public service through mentorship and skills-building; facilitating conversations between practitioners and students; and fostering opportunities and skills to “pop filter bubbles” in order to promote better understanding and less toxicity in the political dialogue.
- The Presidential Nominations Lab will take students on the road to follow the presidential primary process in different states across the country. Scholars at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology are examining the impacts of Artificial Intelligence on democracy. The Street Law program at Georgetown Law Center engages high school students in legal education, building civic awareness and civic engagement skills in the community.
- GU Politics will roll out a full slate of events focused on elections, the policy process, and democratic governance, and the student-led initiative GU Votes is working to enhance the voting culture at Georgetown by simplifying the voting process, increasing turnout rates among students, and directly integrating voter registration into the university ecosystem.
- Many other programs and initiatives across Georgetown are planning a diverse range of programming touching on themes of civic awareness and education, including the Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership, the Center for Democracy and Civil Society, and the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life.
