As we continue to live in an era of extreme political polarization, increasing social instability, and declining faith in the nation’s institutions, I am more committed than ever to working with university presidents to prepare students to be engaged and educated citizens. Together, with our students, we will explore how we can preserve our freedoms while being respectful and open-minded, intellectually honest and curious, and civil, decent, and understanding of one another.

- Task Force on Civic Engagement and Public Service has set a goal of making Rutgers University synonymous with civic engagement and public service.
- Rutgers Eagleton Institute of Politics is designing a three-year project that will build on the Institute’s longtime expertise in providing students with the theoretical and practical foundation necessary to engage in political discussion with people from various ideological perspectives.
- Rutgers Scarlet Service internship program establishes civic engagement as a critical component of higher education and forges a path toward appreciating each other’s differences, restoring civil discourse, and serving the common good.
