RMC is undergoing a strategic transformation to align its curriculum, co-curricular activities and strategic direction toward infusing pluralism into everything we do as part of our mission to create human beings with the mind and the character to be the problem solvers of tomorrow. This affiliation is a perfect complement to that!

Activation Plan

Below is an overview of some campus activities:

    1. A campus-wide pluralism initiative was launched in Spring 2026, with the mission to prepare students to engage thoughtfully with difference, wrestle honestly with moral questions, and contribute constructively to the common good. Its first program, the Citizen Scholars program, encourages students to develop the habits of local, national, and global citizenship through a combination of on- and off-campus civic engagement activities.
    2. Randolph-Macon College’s general education curriculum includes coursework that equips all students to communicate across differences of language and culture, to understand the struggles for full inclusion of underrepresented populations and non-dominant cultures in the U.S., and to be attentive to the ethical and environmental responsibilities of citizenship.
    3. Robust January Term study-travel courses to global destinations promote the lifelong practice of intercultural learning and global understanding.
    4. The College’s SERVE and Leadership Fellows programs help students to develop an understanding and appreciation for cultural and human differences by connecting students to community service and leadership opportunities on campus and throughout Central Virginia.
    5. New efforts to strengthen interfaith understanding and engagement are underway through the College’s Chaplain’s Office.
    6. The College’s Franklin Debating Society promotes civil dialogue and debate both on campus and via intercollegiate competition, while the College actively models civil dialogue through campus-wide speakers and events.

Highlights

Randolph-Macon College and its Department of Asian Studies received the Ambassador’s Commendation from the Embassy of Japan in December 2024 “in recognition of its distinguished service in contributing to the deepening of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States.”
