Our commitment to civil discourse and civic engagement is one of the many ways the University of Vermont lives out the values of what we call “Our Common Ground”: respect, integrity, innovation, openness, justice and responsibility. With our mission of education and inquiry at the heart of all we do, we prioritize connection, engagement and inclusion in conversations about the many critical issues facing our community, our country and the world.

Below is an overview of some campus activities:

The President’s Initiative on Civil Discourse is the University of Vermont’s shared effort to highlight existing programs that advance civil discourse and civic engagement among students, faculty, staff and community members at UVM, and to develop new ones. Through this new Initiative, UVM will lead by example, demonstrating how institutions of higher education can more fully, more credibly, and more effectively embrace their responsibilities to students—and to broader society. The Initiative will build upon and amplify several initiatives at UVM that support the free exchange of ideas, and develop constructive new opportunities through greater urgency, resources, collaboration, and creativity.
