At Augsburg University, we honor our commitments to a vibrant civic life, to the liberal arts, and to the diverse students we serve, by setting a table where all voices are heard, all life experiences are valued, and all of our fellow travelers are engaged in support of a vibrant democracy.

Below is an overview of some campus activities:

  • The Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg University connects students, faculty, staff, and community members in the everyday work of learning together to address public issues, make change, and build democracy. Its programs include Bonner Leaders, a cohort-based program of students committed to civic and community engagement; a food justice initiative that works to make healthy and culturally appropriate food accessible on campus and in the surrounding community; and sustainability programs like a community garden and ShareShop, a student-run free store.
  • Augsburg‘s newly-revised general education curriculum includes required courses addressing equity, power, and social justice; local and global perspectives; and sustainability and wellness.
  • Augsburg’s annual convocation series includes topics from various disciplines (theology, interfaith, gender studies, anti-racism, and the sciences), all of which are linked to civic life.
  • Since 2020, Augsburg has recognized Election Day as a holiday to allow students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to participate in the democratic process through voting, volunteering, and community engagement.
