In this time, it’s crucial that we do more than just bring people together to share the same space. We will double-down on the importance of a thriving, safe and welcoming community for everyone at Whitman. And we will make the most of the extraordinary opportunity for connection and face-to-face learning on a diverse and international campus. We will elevate the importance of constructive civil discourse, where honest conversation from different points of view is valued and leads to deeper understanding and creative collaboration.

Below is an overview of some campus activities:

  • Launched in Spring 2024, Whitman will continue its Dialogue and Dignity Initiative that builds campus capacity for learning and respectful dialogue about issues that are contested. The Dialogue and Dignity Initiative launched with visiting speakers and two workshops that offered multiple perspectives on the conflicts in Israel and Gaza, as well as on the related issues of antisemitism and Islamophobia. Each speaker gives a public lecture and will also have open opportunities for conversation and dialogue in smaller groups. The initiative also includes workshops and skill-building opportunities to enhance students’ ability to engage fruitfully with those with whom they disagree.
