Virginia Wesleyan University's commitment to the free expression and exchange of ideas is a testament to the fundamental role that civic discourse and preparedness play in shaping a well-rounded, liberal arts education. By nurturing an environment where diverse viewpoints are encouraged, the university equips students not only with knowledge but also with the critical thinking skills necessary to engage responsibly and effectively in our democratic society. This philosophy ensures that individuals are not only aware of their rights but are also active, informed participants in the ongoing dialogue that defines and refines our collective values and policies.

Below is an overview of some campus activities:

  • “Marlins Vote,” the University’s campus election engagement initiative, promotes a three-point program featuring voter registration, issues education, and volunteer opportunities. This program goes beyond “get out the vote” efforts to include a variety of academic and social activities designed to encourage students and the broader campus community to become active participants in the electoral process at the local, state, and national levels.
  • The university promotes special events during election season including voter registration drives on-campus and off, community debate and watch parties on campus, and election “pop-ups.”
  • We invite political speakers and presenters such as those that are part of the “What’s at Stake: Election Series,” and develop activities and presentations organized by the VWU Robert Nusbaum Center and The Lighthouse.
  • The university supports student organizations such as College Republicans, Young Democrats, Marlins Vote, Black Student Union, Spectrum, and the Fraternity/Sorority community.
  • Virginia Wesleyan University offers academic opportunities through the political science, history and other departments and connects students with internships and job opportunities with local campaigns or civic organizations.
  • For its efforts, the University has been recognized by the ALL In Democracy Challenge for the Voter Action Plan since 2016. After the 2020 presidential election, the University earned a “Silver Seal,”acknowledging approximately 60-70% nonpartisan student voter participation, tied for “Best in Class” among private four-year institutions, and won the “Virginia Campus Voting Challenge” among four-year institutions in the Commonwealth. In 2022, VWU was recognized by ALL IN as one of the year’s Most Engaged Campuses for College Student Voting.
