“Speaking of the future, it is my sincere hope, class of 2025 that you will take Depauw’s values of equal commitments to freedom of expression and to welcoming, supporting and affirming a diverse community whose different experiences, perspectives and viewpoints are the foundation of a liberal arts education out into the world in which you are entering. There are, sadly, many who are questioning the value of higher education. However, I contend that a healthy, thriving democracy, which I know we all desire, depends upon all of the things we have taught you here at DePauw, to think critically, to pursue truth through factual research, to be open to new ideas and ways of knowing, to listen carefully and engage respectfully across differences. Our country and our world will be stronger and more humane because of the education you received here at DePauw, which we expect you to use to do good in the world.”
