Activation Plan
Below is an overview of some campus activities:
- American Democracy Project (ADP): WSU has been an active AASCU ADP campus for over two decades, engaging students in nonpartisan civic learning through deliberative dialogues, voter engagement initiatives, and community-based public issues forums. WSU has earned four national Ballot Bowl Awards for its student voter turnout and civic education efforts.
- Warrior Conversations: Students from the Communication and Civic Dialogue class host Warrior Conversations, which focus campus discussion and deliberation on issues most salient to students. Facilitated by students, these conversations consider stakeholders and value positions where multiple perspectives and equal participation are welcomed.
- “What’s Next, America?” Deliberative Dialogue Series: In recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, WSU is bringing the National Issues Forums Institute’s “What’s Next, America?” initiative to campus, convening students, faculty, and community members in structured, nonpartisan deliberation on the challenges and opportunities facing the country’s next quarter-century. The series reflects the university’s mission of engaged learning and listening across differences.
- Jason Fossum Legislative Engagement Center. Housed in the College of Liberal Arts, the Jason Fossum Legislative Engagement Center connects students directly to the legislative process through internships, civic placements, and hands-on engagement with policymaking at the state and local level. The Center anchors a broader civic education strategy that pairs classroom learning with real-world democratic participation.
- Centers for Civic Life Faculty Fellows Program (James Madison University): WSU was selected as one of 12 anchor campuses nationally for JMU’s Madison Center for Civic Engagement Faculty Fellows in Deliberative Pedagogy program. It builds deliberation and dialogue capacity on campus, including hosting campus forums and developing new deliberative issue guides for use in WSU classrooms and in the community.
