As we approach the next academic year, both the Civic Commitments and the work of the Presidents for Civic Preparedness, can be a critical component of the work that Occidental College is doing to graduate the most civic-minded and culturally-responsive graduates in higher education.

Activation Plan
Below is an overview of some campus activities:
- Enhance the use of Restorative Practices to build community by shifting conversations from debate and toward empathy, understanding, and community healing. This will be done through integration in orientation, within the residence halls, and using faculty and staff facilitators as conduits of this change. This will aid them in developing effective ways of expressing their individual opinions on a variety of difficult topics and to understand the impact of their words on others they engage with – prompting consistent opportunities to responsibly promote free individual expression.
- Constructive Dialogue Institute Perspectives Blended Learning Program will implement online lessons, peer-to-peer conversations, and targeted reflections and assessments. This will be one method of ensuring civic discourse development led by student leaders, including resident advisors, and recognized student organization presidents, among others.
- Campus-wide Speaker Series focused on key components of civil engagement in society – justice, equity, etc. This series will focus on local leaders and community activists. It will also partner with key academic and non-academic departments.
