La Salle University Commencement, Daniel Allen

“I am especially proud to greet you today graduates because you fill me with hope. Hope in the future of your generation of our city, of our nation, of the countries that some of you call home all across the globe.

You see there’s a great deal of energy these days being directed at colleges and universities and the remarkable students who study at these schools. Folks who are questioning the very value of the degree you all just earned and questioning whether or not you are up to the task of allowing your lights to shine around the globe.

You know what I just don’t see it the way they do. They don’t see your talent, your ambition, your grit, your innovation, your service, your kindness, and your empathy. They lump all these universities together and they put all college students in the same basket. And see what these folks don’t know if I can borrow a line from one of the leading artists of our time, “They not like us.”

“We reflect on our namesake Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the patron saint of teachers who dedicated his life to meeting students where they were and was devoted to the formation of the whole person.

I believe he would be proud of what La Salle University stands for today. We serve our neighborhood, our city, and yes, in fact, La Salle University serves the United States of America.

Higher Education remains a crucial aspect of a healthy and well-functioning democracy. Schools like La Salle are places where as we declare in our very own mission statement foster a rigorous free search for truth, where we compel you to think critically, write cogently, work through differences and prepare not just for a job but for a rewarding life as a global citizen as a LasallianCatholic university we do these things with the belief in the presence of God.”
