At Sewanee, fostering a culture of civil discourse is something the university actively practices. The Dinner & Dialogue project brings together students and faculty from across the University for a meal and structured conversation. It’s an opportunity for the Sewanee community to discuss big and challenging ideas in a relaxed environment but outside of their comfort zone. Themes include “The Value of a Liberal Arts Education” and “Free Expression on Campus.”
As one participant noted, “I felt that I was able to dialogue with people at my table that had diverse experiences from me, and we were able to have a deeper understanding of one another’s experiences and perspectives because of the excellent efforts of the facilitator.” Another shared, “I met new folks, and we had a lovely and lively conversation. We were able to ask questions and ponder in a safe and constructive space. New friends were made!”
